Hampshire County Jail and House of Correction

The Hampshire County Jail and House of Correction is the main lock-up for this part of the state. It sits at 205 Rocky Hill Road in Northampton. Sheriff Patrick J. Cahillane runs the facility, and it holds both pre-trial detainees and those who have been sentenced. The jail earned ACA accreditation back in August 1990 and also holds NCCHC accreditation for health care. When someone gets booked here, a mugshot is taken as part of the intake process along with personal details and charge info.

The facility has five buildings. The main building houses pre-trial and medium security inmates, plus health services, a kitchen, visiting areas, and admin offices. A modular unit has two 60-man housing sections set up in dorm style with 8-man and 4-man rooms. There is also a day room, treatment rooms, a dental room, and a culinary arts kitchen in that unit. A separate minimum security building sits outside the secure perimeter. It has a food delivery kitchen and a weight room. The fifth building handles vehicle and equipment repair.

Hampshire County Booking Record Details

Each booking at the Hampshire County Jail creates a record with a lot of data. The file includes the person's full legal name and any known aliases. Date of birth, gender, and race are recorded. A physical description goes into the file. The booking photograph, or mugshot, is taken at intake. An inmate ID number is assigned to each person.

Beyond that, the record lists the booking date and time, the arresting agency, current charges, and case numbers. Bond and bail info is included when set. The record notes the court that has jurisdiction and any scheduled court dates. Custody classification and housing assignment are tracked by the jail. For sentenced inmates, the file has sentence length and expected release date. All of this data is part of what you might get back from a records request.

Massachusetts law makes a distinction about mugshots. The Supervisor of Public Records ruled in 2010 that booking photos taken before criminal proceedings start are public records. Photos taken after a complaint is filed fall under CORI rules per MGL c. 6, Section 167. This means some mugshots are easier to get than others.

Mugshot Access Laws in Hampshire County

Getting jail mugshots in Hampshire County follows state public records law. Massachusetts has strong open records rules. The law says every person who has custody of a public record must let people see it at reasonable times and without delay. That is the core of MGL c. 66, Section 10.

But there are limits. Under MGL c. 4, Section 7(26), some records are exempt. Investigatory materials and records that could harm safety are not always available. The CORI system adds another layer. Criminal Offender Record Information is restricted to authorized users for the most part. Standard CORI checks through the iCORI portal cost $25 per request.

Police logs are a different story. Under MGL c. 41, Section 98F, every town police department in Hampshire County must keep a daily log. That log records complaints, crimes reported, names of arrested persons, and charges. These logs are public and free to view during business hours. They do not fall under the CORI exemption.

Note: Records that have been sealed under MGL c. 276, Sections 100A and 100C will not show up in any search, and the jail cannot release sealed mugshots.
